3 Left Feet

The whole school has been participating in a dance residency program. Three Left Feet encourages children to express themselves through dance with the motto that "everybody can dance." The kids have been very excited to go to dance class and will show off what they've learned in a performance tomorrow (May 14) at 11:00. All parents, grandparents, guardians, friends, etc. are welcome to come! If you're unable to attend, enjoy the short video below.

Alien Inline

We had a blast learning to inline skate! As the week progressed, students learned the necessary skills to improve their skating, such as stopping and turning.

Our school is very lucky that Parent Council  pays for this program so that all students can participate!

Swimming

As part of the gym program, we are learning how to swim as well as improve our skills at the pool.  We had a great time!

Students practiced different skills in the pool, like floating and front crawl.

As the week went on, the children got more comfortable in the pool.

Jumping off the diving board into the dive pool was one of their favourite parts!

Parents, swimming reports will be coming home soon after Spring Break. Please keep note of your child's swimming level for next year's lessons.

Mining for Chocolate Chips

Last week we "mined" a chocolate chip using two different methods. First students removed the chocolate chips any way they wanted, including crushing the cookie. Then students used a toothpick to "mine" the chocolate chips.
They discovered that while crushing the cookie resulted in extracting more chocolate chips, the cookie was destroyed beyond repair. Removing the chocolate chips with a toothpick kept their cookie in tact. We compared this with mining different minerals and learned that some methods destroy the environment while others protect it. It was a delicious lesson!

Field Trip to Telus Spark

On Monday we went to Telus Spark to learn more about boats as well as structures and buildings. Our first task was to determine which items float and which sink.

We thought light items will float but learned that it's objects with air in them that float the best.

Next, we designed a boat using found materials. Each group was assigned a specific type of boat such as, sailboat, barge, tugboat, cruise and cargo ships.

The last task was to test the boats to make sure they would float! We placed our boats in the large water table and watch them float downstream.

Thanks again to the parents who volunteered their time to come with us!

Adopt an Animal

Over the past few weeks, we have been researching endangered animals such as the polar bear, arctic fox, and sea turtles on the worldwildlife.org website. The children recognized that these animals need our help and suggested a fundraiser. Our goal is to raise $100 in order to adopt an animal from WWF. Next week, we will be sharing what we learned with the rest of the school and asking for change to support our cause. If you have spare change, please send it to school with your child.

Baking

It's the last week of school and we have been involved in lots of fun activities. Yesterday, we made Gingerbread men.

After they finished baking in the oven, they disappeared! It seemed that our Gingerbread men ran away. Luckily, they left a note which led us on a scavenger hunt through the school to where they were hiding. Once we found them, we had a great time decorating and eating our cookies!
